Default Selling tips?

Hi all

Today I managed to buy 2 green items from Lions Arch, for a very cheap price, even though they were worth several times the amount I got them for. Because I had never done this before, and was excited about the prospect of having more money in storage than I ever had done, I got to work on selling them.

Over the last few hours, I have been trying to sell them on and off - of course with breaks inbetween (otherwise I'd fall to sleep ). The question I have to any of the more experienced sellers is can they offer any advice to a person who is relatively new to selling to other people? (as opposed to selling items at the merchant)

It would also be nice to know what the best towns/cities are for selling. I would have thought Lion's Arch would be one of the best, but about 3 seconds after entering my "wts" message, it has dissapeared off the channel due to all of the other messages

Any advice would be appretiated

Be careful what you wish for: you may get it.

Buying and Selling items in GW sucks, basically. It's a bunch of haggling. People want to look when hey have no intention to buy. People will call your item "crap" when it's a good item. People will call you a "scammer" when your price is rock-bottom. I know people make big money buying low and selling high, but I can't imagine they're having too much fun in the process. I'd rather be farming where I at least have the random loot draw keeping my attention, to some degree.

Anyway, the best way to sell items is to know their values to yourself and your buyers. If you try to sell too high, you're just wasting your time and costing yourself money, as time = money. I always include a price, even if I'm willing to come down a bit, or at least have a price in mind if someone makes and offer and wants a counter offer. People that demand offers and refuse to put up their own price are just time-wasting, gutless wusses, IMO. FWIW, I find the best way to sells stuff is to make a reasonable price, then come down a bit to respond to a counter-offer. Just know the minimum price you'd sell the item.

Make your WTS message clear and easy to read. Sell in LA and Drok's, switching districts regularly. If that doesn't work, places like Ascalon, Tombs, TK, and War Camp are decent alternatives. Finally, don't let people rush you or even scam you.

that's probably the best advice you can get.

how about posting the greens along w/the prices you expect to get?

sounds to me like you're in d1, which gets a ton of trade chat, but believe it or not, people are actually reading that stuff, so go ahead and post your wts there, but don't confine yourself to just one dis.
like that other guy said --- hop around.
use ctrl-c, ctrl-v, and the arrow keys to save yourself some typing.

also, you really want to stick to stuff that is popular, and try to undercut the mob a little to move stuff quicker.

it all really depends on your situation, so it's kind of hard to give advice.

personally, I don't find trading to be so arduous, and I have the time to spend in chat because I only actually play once a week.
I'll always end up chatting w/somebody I meet, or spending some time w/the noobs answering questions, or whatever.
I just don't let myself get sucked into this pointless haggling or bickering.
if they're not in my price range and don't want to show me a good attitude I'm happy to just walk away from it and find somebody else.

All I can say is I hope you did not pay more than 2k for the Malign hammer, its a hard item to sell, people just dont want it. I finally sold mine after about 3 weeks for 2.5k.
Be careful what you buy, just cause an item is green and you think its got great mods, doesnt mean it is going to sell for a lot, I got a thorgalls Stonsmasher, Malign hammer, and a Galigords wand(what I was after) for an ecto, thought Id make a ton on the other 2 items, I eventually gave the Thorgalls smasher away, and sold the Malign for the price mentioned above(was just about to give it away too). All I can say is good luck.

In addition to the great advice already here,

- Don't buy low and sell high unless you're dealing with an item that's in demand. As mentioned before, hammers are notoriously difficult to sell, never buy them in the hope of selling them at a higher price as you'll simply be wasting your time.
- State prices for your WTS messages. You'll get nothing but lowballers or people who can't afford your items if you say "make an offer."
- Try to say as much about your item as you can in your WTS message without getting too verbose. "Selling a really good bow" says nothing, people who want to buy are looking for specifics. "WTS: Longbow (req 8) 15^50, +30HP, 10/10 (100k)" will get people's attention.
- Expect some haggling, don't worry about selling your items a little bit below the average price. In the long run, 1k, 5k or even 10k isn't much to lose.

I personally hate to sell items...

IMO its best to sell items for 1-10k each unless they are godly... or have perfect mods... if they have perfect mods I just try and salvage the mod...

As far as GW Auction or the buy and sell pages, don't bother unless you have a godly perfect item... chances are it won't sell and you will spend days bumping posts... people on GW Guru generally want godly items with perfect mods and don't want to buy low end crap (this is just my experience).

Best solution i have found is to find someone trustworth and off your items to him/her and have them sell for you... I have a guy who I give about 10-30 gold good items to per week and he sells them and gives me the money, I give him between 30% and 50%.

My time is better spent farming then trying to sell one 10k item for 10 hours in LA D1. I'll go into D1 and say:

ALL GOLD ALL MAX W/ MODS SWORDS :: AXES :: SHIELDS :: BOWS ALL UNDER 5k EACH

something like that I can off 10 items in about 1 hour... any more time then that and I might miss out on my next 15 ^ 50% req 8 chaos axe..

As far as buying and re-selling items I would generally avoide this untill you KNOW EXACTLY what you are doing and how fast an item will sell... generally I would consider this scamming and taking advantage of someone so I like to tell people if they have a godly item and just don't know it.. I rahter do this and feel good about myself then rip them off..

and finally NEVER, NEVER, and I MEAN NEVER ever buy UN-IDed GOLD items NEVER EVER.. since the mods can be tested before the item is IDed.

Personally I find selling fun. Believe it or not. Because in the long run, for former Diablo players like me its all about getting the perfect item and trading for it is always fun.

If you're selling greens I usually sell 5-10k below what it's worth at Deldrimor War Camp and people will usually buy it. For high end items (15>50 weapons, 10/10 staves) I use the GWG Sell forums.

Did you even look at the link you posted, there are about 15 hammers of which 2 of them actually have bids on them, the one is the hammer in question up to the grand total of 550g.

I tried to say this earlier but the board was locking up bad. Gurus prices are severley overinflated, this is due to the greeed of the sellers and is not a reflection on GWG. Personally I do not pay what people ask, claiming 'Guru lists it at whatever', and I know lots of others who feel the same way. I get things for what I think it is worth, due to the market, and not the over inflated prices listed on some forum. If you get over 2.5k for that axe I would be VERY surprised

edit#3 LOL I just realised I believe you are making the point, 'nobody buys hammers', sorry for the misunderstanding...

Thanks for all the advice so far. Unfortunately last night, I had difficulty getting on to the forums and I brought a hammer (Victo's Maul) of a person for 2k, but had high hopes because on this forum its said to be going for 5-10k and its a 15^50 (which seem to be quite popular).

I will admit I am sometimes guilty of using the 'All' channel to do trading in (but I think everyone is). The problem I have with the trade channel is that colour of the names of the people who are selling items are near enough the same colour as the text, which means when a bunch of people (say 3+) give the details of their items on the trade channel, it can be quite hard to read IMO.
